6 spas in the Thermen- & Vulkanland Steiermark

Styrian spa variety

When two opposites meet, like fire and water, the effect is both invigorating and calming. This harmonious interplay between the elements, coupled with some delightful “extras”, guarantee that your time in the dynamic Thermen- & Vulkanland region between Bad Radkersburg and Bad Waltersdorf will be a pleasure from start to finish

In the Thermen- und Vulkanland Steiermark, thermal water bubbles vigorously from the earth at five spa resorts in Bad Radkersburg, Bad Gleichenberg, Bad Loipersdorf, Bad Blumau and Bad Waltersdorf . It originates at a depth of up to 3,000 m and can reach up to 110 degrees. The soft, salutary water offers warmth and wellbeing, gushes with energy and joie de vivre, and helps to bring beauty, health and inner balance.

The six spas in the Thermen- und Vulkanland Steiermark were the first to recognise the beneficial effects of bathing in thermal water, making it accessible in specially built spas. Due to the different mineral contents of the individual springs, each spa specialises in different fields of wellbeing, although they are all located close to the state capital of Graz.

Bathing is healthy
Even long ago, the ancient Romans appreciated thermal waters. Since the 2nd century, medicine has taken an interest in the effects of warm water on the human body. “Sanus per aquam” became a familiar phrase. It simply means “healthy through water”, and is the non-abbreviated form of our modern term “spa”.
Balneology, the study of natural medicinal springs and their uses, firmly recommends regular spa visits. People often talk about so-called thermo-mineral products, meaning thermal water, thermal mud and thermal steam. These products have a positive impact on our body’s virological and antioxidative systems. In other words, regular stays at a spa will strengthen our immune system.
The mineral composition of thermal water coupled with its temperature play a part in these health-giving and life-prolonging effects. Studies demonstrate that not only does the water have a positive effect on the circulatory system, but that thermal water therapy also eases ailments such as psoriasis or rheumatism.
In general, people feel particularly comfortable in waters of around 36 degrees. It eases the muscles and triggers a feeling of embryonic protection. This is the essence of why water is also good for the psyche.

6 spas – salutary thermal water

Range of spas

Thermal water, proven to reduce stress, is of course the focus. All six spas have their own individual specialities and directions. Each is an expert in its chosen field of wellbeing, which also depends on the different mineral compositions of each location. Those seeking peace and quiet will be richly rewarded at the Therme der Ruhe Bad Gleichenberg, the Rogner Bad Blumau, the Heiltherme Bad Waltersdorf and the Schaffelbad at the Thermenresorts Loipersdorf. Those looking for a bit more action are recommended to try the 50 m sports pool at the  Parktherme Bad Radkersburg. Families with children love the “Blauer Blitz”, a wide slide that accommodates two rings at a time, the  H2O-Kindertherme in Bad Waltersdorf or the “baby beach” with real sand at the Thermenresort Loipersdorf.

More details about the comprehensive range of spas and vitality resorts can be found here:

Parktherme Bad Radkersburg

The southernmost spa in the Thermen- & Vulkanland has been awarded the title “spa of the year” several times. Its multifaceted pool complex with bubbling massage jets in the vitality pool and spring pool, the 50 m sports pool, and a spacious children’s adventure area attract guests to the Parktherme just as much as its extraordinary array of saunas. It also offers an activity & vitality programme to join. The Vita Med Health Centre is a competent point for fitness coaching and more.

Therme der Ruhe Bad Gleichenberg

The thermal water at the Therme der Ruhe Bad Gleichenberg is rich in magnesium and calcium, and exhibits a high sodium content. Salt is extracted from the water by means of a brine processing facility and administered in varying concentrations – in particular for inhalations to treat respiratory diseases, and as a concentrated salt bath to treat neurodermitis and psoriasis. The medicinal water can also be drunk.

Among other things, the thermal water is beneficial for chronic, acute or allergic rhinitis, chronic pharyngitis, inflammation of the vocal cords and laryngitis, cellulite, inflammatory and degenerative and soft tissue rheumatism, tendonitis and neuralgia.

Thermenresort Bad Loipersdorf

Highly mineralised thermal water from three springs feeds the pools in Bad Loipersdorf, where guests of all ages splash happily around. Deep relaxation and peace at the Schaffelbad meets bathing fun for the whole family at the adventure pool. Five spectacular water slides, the wave pool and the Acapulco pool with diving platform and wide slide make a perfect day’s swimming. Those looking for a bit more indulgence can expect a blissful treat at the private spa.

Rogner Bad Blumau

The Rogner Bad Blumau is a work of art you can actually live in, with a fairy-tale like swimming pool complex, 14 different indoor and outdoor pools, and two thermal springs. The hot Vulkania® is the strongest medicinal spring in the Thermen- und Vulkanland: highly mineralised primordial water springing from a depth of some 3,000 m, with a natural brine content. Water temperatures of 21° to 37° C ensure bathing fun all year round.

Heiltherme Bad Waltersdorf

Austria’s first 2-spa resort hotel is the Heiltherme Bad Waltersdorf. In addition to its medicinal spa, the “spring hotel” also boasts a “spring oasis”, where a thermal water pool is integrated into a natural lake. One of the Heiltherme Bad Waltersdorf’s special innovations is perhaps the “Traditional Styrian Medicine®” (TSM®). Time-honoured medicinal remedies and recipes from the region find new use in unique massages and health treatments.

H2O Hotel Therme Resort

At the H₂O Hotel Therme Resort, everything revolves about its youngest guests and their parents. Spanning over 30,000 m², young exercisers can explore the pool complex and adventure areas to their heart’s content: maybe on the double-wide ring slide “blauer Blitz” or the HopiHo water garden. The H₂O entertainment team ensure there’s never a dull moment, with this splendid choice of water attractions! Spend a peaceful few hours away from the hubbub at the Spa Massage World, with its large sauna area for adults.

Sauna and spa: a match made in heaven

Relaxation for body and soul

These days it’s hard to imagine a Styrian spa without a wide range of saunas. Regular visits to a spa have a positive effect on health, and boost our cardiovascular system. High temperatures also encourage blood flow, and relax the skin and muscles, easing painful tensions. Finally, taking a sauna stimulates the metabolism and sweat production, ensuring that toxins are excreted through the skin. A visit to a sauna has an equally beneficial effect on our mental health, as our entire body relaxes and our sense of wellbeing improves – just let your soul switch off and fly free.
The six spas of the Thermen- und Vulkanland also offer guests the chance to pick and choose what suits them best. Whether a Finnish sauna, steam bath, infrared cabin, tepidarium or laconium – every sweat bath works its own special magic on our body, soul and spirit, having an unquestionable effect on our mood and equilibrium. Guided infusions using a variety of fragrant essential oils are also on offer, as is the opportunity to cool down after your time in the sauna (highly recommended): plunge pool and Kneipp pool are top of the list in this respect – or have you ever tried an ice grotto?
